AP- Terror Issues Are Just Election Ploys?

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Associated Press seems to think that Bush's terror related questions are mere election ploys, solely talking points being cast about to help Congressional Republicans to win elections in the upcoming 2006 midterms.

Bush has been undertaking an intense effort to clear up the issues surrounding both his NSA surveillance questions as well as questions surrounding the legal rights that captured terrorists have and just how the Administration might treat them once in US custody. These are questions that have been brewing since the attacks on 9/11/01 and, with recent Supreme Court decisions, dents have been put in the President's conception of what he can and cannot do causing the president to seek solid answers.

These questions are also some of the most important questions that we must answer as a nation to nail down how we are going to answer to terrorism, how we are going to stop it, and how we are going to protect ourselves.

...but to the Associated Press, they seem to be merely election issues being used by an embattled GOP instead of some of the most important issues of our time, issues that must be answered whether we happen to have an election coming up or not.

In a recent report, Senate GOP torpedoes proposed limits on Bush wiretaps, the AP constantly interjected that all these questions happen to be coming just prior to the 2006 midterms as if Bush is only trying to get election talking points out.

The drumbeat of "the election season" runs throughout the piece. In a story that is disguised as a serious reporting on the efforts to clarify War on Terror measures, the elections are mentioned 5 times as if that is more Bush's focus than the actual issues facing Congress and the president.

"The administration is up against an election season in which Republicans are struggling to keep its majority with approval from a war-weary electorate."

"Specter, R-Pennsylvania, has acknowledged that GOP lawmakers fighting for re-election may not embrace a measure bearing Bush's stamp of approval."

"The deal is part of the White House's election-season campaign to preserve its ability to fight the war on terror despite congressional concerns about civil liberties."

"A parade of White House officials seeking support for legal tools against terrorists was to culminate Thursday with an appearance by Bush himself before House Republicans anxious to maintain their majority in the November elections."

"The standoffs raised questions about whether the president could unite Republicans on his anti-terror agenda before November's midterm elections."

Why this constant reminding of the reader about upcoming elections interjected into stories of efforts to congeal a sensible, constitutional, and legal system of dealing with terror? One would likely imagine that the AP is trying to undermine and make light of such important questions by constantly leading the reader to equate these important issues with mere vote getting maneuvers.

Not only that but the AP also casts all Bush's actions in negative terms.

"Senate Republicans blocked Democratic attempts to rein in President Bush's domestic wiretapping program Wednesday..."

"The developments come amid a sustained White House campaign to persuade Congress to give the administration broad authority to monitor, interrogate and prosecute terrorism suspects."

"While refusing to give the president a blank check to prosecute the war on terrorism..."

"The deal is part of the White House's election-season campaign to preserve its ability to fight the war on terror despite congressional concerns about civil liberties."

And who is the only person actually quoted in the piece? A Democrat fighting against the President's efforts to protect us.

"We just don't want to see Americans' rights abused for the next 50 or 60 years because of an oversight on our part," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-California, who joined some Republicans in opposing some amendments offered by her Democratic colleagues.

And all this negative flavor in just one story!

Reporting?

More like advocacy! Advocacy against Bush.

I love terror supporters like Blogstomper Bimbo. They come here and prove all my points for me. I don't even have to work too hard with these type of Chamberlainesque, head-in-the-sand Ostriches hanging around.

but, let us hope that most Americans aren't as hateful, ignorant, self-destructive, and supportive of the enemy as Blogstomper Bimbo!

Thanks for stopping by and proving me right. I appreciate the tip in.
