Taft Signs Voter ID Into Law (Ohio Gets an ATTABOY!)



This is certainly good news. Ohio's Gov. Taft has signed a law that will require voters to present a driver's license or other specific identification before they will be allowed to vote in Ohio elections. Until today, an Ohioan could just walk up to a polling place and claim verbally who they were and where they lived, without registration or any real proof.

I am a bit surprised that the leftward leaning Taft made this conciliatory gesture to conservative Ohioans, to tell the truth. Taft must be sensing how tenuous his position is at long last.

Here are a few segments from a recent report on the signing of this bill.

Democrats argued that the ID requirements will make it harder for seniors, the poor and disabled to vote.

Obviously poor people and old folk are just too stupid to understand that they must prove that they actually qualify to vote, I suppose. Is there no end to Democrat condescension?

DeWine and Speaker Jon Husted, also from suburban Dayton, said they expect voters won't experience problems at the polls but will instead have more confidence in election security.

Dewine trying to regain so much lost credibility. It's doubtful it will work for him this late in the game.

A union steward who votes Democratic, she said she was glad the ID requirement would increase security.

"It's not a burden," she said. "You could be anybody that's walking in to vote for somebody else."

Now there is a smart woman!

But Julie Batey, 39, a Democratic Party volunteer from Wadsworth in northeast Ohio, said she used to work in personnel and found that many low-income people don't have a valid ID.

"I think it's kind of a Republican ploy to kind of affect the voters out there who would possibly vote Democratic," she said.

Oh, please. They have to find someone touting the blind, leftist talking points. It's just more Democratic fear mongering. Just like the lies that blacks were kept from voting in florida, believed as gospel even though there is not a shred of proof to the allegations.

Anyway, good going Ohio. Let's hope this will spread to other states.

It's about listening to the roots, not the

unhealthy growth, the parasite, on the trunk of the tree. That is, after all, what democracy is all about. And any tree without healthy roots risks toppling in wind. When one big DeLay sized tree falls, it can start a fir-wave, toppling all the trees below it.

The importance of listening to the roots is demonstrated by Warner Todd Huston, "Leftist Blogs indicate Intraparty Rift? Well, Duh." In this piece, a response to a WaPo editorial, "Blogs attack from left," Huston takes the WaPo to task for saying the liberal blogosphere is a new phenomena. He says the liberal blogosphere -- he calls it the extreme liberal left -- has been active since 2001. Least he got something right.

But more telling is this:

We are not seeing a Democratic Party only lately coming to extreme leftism because of the efforts of "liberal Web logs". It is the Bloggers who are only lately come to the game of extremism. Hard left Democrats are happy to use these Bloggers and their rhetoric to shore up their already blatant leftist tilt.


It is the right's view of power structure, a view of it coming from the top down. And we see it over and over and over; in trickle-down economics, in the assumptions of tax-cuts for the rich stimulating the economy, in no-bid defense contracts.

This assumption that power rests in the mighty few at the top ignores the roots. They're ignoring the Repubicans who believe in fiscal control, limited government, privacy, responsibility. The roots, built on the religious right and corporate elite, are rotting.

It's a lesson Democrats need to take to heart, rinse, and repeat. When you forget you're roots, you grow top heavy and risk toppling in the next wind to whip through Washington.

Wow, what a misconstruction of what I was trying to say!

I had no intention of saying that power must rest at the "top" and the the "down" should dutifully shut up and follow along like puppies. After all, I am myself a conservative activist on the grass-roots level and, if I really believed as this fellow on DailyKos claims I do, I would be making useless my own attempts to guide my own side. I mean, I ain't no highly placed insider. Bush may have sent me a Christmas card, but he sure as heck isn't calling me on the phone to ask my advice! -- And no one has caught ME in conference calls with the vast right wig conspiracy planning sessions.

My point was that the DailyKos is not guiding debate but merely reacting to the predetermined leftward tilt the Democrats had undertaken decades ago. They aren't the "new grass-roots" powerhouses they think they are, but simply the absurdist end of a movement created when most of them weren't even alive.

And that is the problem. Most of the youngsters at the DailyKos (and that goes for the chief wing-nut, Kos himself) are too young to realize that they aren't being "new" in their reactions and policy ideas. They really are out of touch with the long, leftist, road trod by the failed dreamers who brought them here on their backs so that Kozers today would have the ideological base from which to scream like petulant children when Democrats don't go far enough loony left for them.

Not only is reasoned debate out of their ken, but they aren't even aware how they got to this point in the first place. This means that they have no sense of history or philosophy. They only react within their enclosed world with no touch-stone to reality.

The proof of this is how far from the idea of American exceptionalism that they have drifted. To them, we are no longer the country representing "that shining city on a hill" that is the light unto the world for freedom and liberty. To them we are "just another country", no better or worse than the rest.

Still, the poster on the Kos went far afield from where I was going with my Op Ed and imparted ideas to the piece that I neither broached nor intended while ignoring the points actually presented.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Congratulations, Samual Alito!




Today, the Senate confiirmed Judge Samuel Alito as the 110th Supreme Court Justice in a 58 to 42 vote.

This is a great day for the Court, I certainly hope. Let us hope that we now have another justice who will adjudicate by reading law and not writing it from the bench.

Let us all pray that Bush does, indeed, get one more chance to place a Justice on the Court before his last term is over.

One thing about this, though. This vote preves that the Dems have little power over this country. They tried their best to stop this nomination and failed miserably.

Illinois Wants To Ban Squirt Guns?

Representatives Daniel J. Burke and Edward J. Acevedo (both Democrats from Chicago, of course) have decided that squirt guns are dangerous, apparently. Last year, Burke sponsored HB4132 in the Capital, Springfield, IL, which will make "replica" guns illegal in the state.(Introduced 10/20/05)

Here is the synopsis of the bill:


Amends the Criminal Code of 1961. Provides that it is unlawful for any person to purchase, possess, use, sell, give away, or otherwise transfer, or to engage in the business of selling, or to exhibit for sale, any replica rocket propelled grenade launcher, bazooka, artillery piece, grenade, mine, bomb, or items similar to weapons designed and manufactured for military purposes or replicas of those items. Provides that a violation is a Class A misdemeanor.

Mr. President, Let Military Chaplains Pray in Jesus' Name



Dear Mr. President:

We are disappointed and gravely concerned to learn that the right of military chaplains to pray according to their faith is in jeopardy. As you may know, the Air Force leadership recently released proposed guidelines that will restrict how Air Force chaplains can pray, and if approved, those guidelines may well be implemented throughout the entire DoD. We believe that the Air Force’s suppression of religious freedom is a pervasive problem throughout our nation’s Armed Forces, and it has come to our attention that in all branches of the military it is becoming increasingly difficult for Christian chaplains to use the name of Jesus when praying. There are currently no laws or regulations that prohibit chaplains from praying according to their respective denominations or different faiths, and we are deeply concerned that chaplains are now being instructed on what to say when they pray.

Throughout our nation’s history, chaplains not only have remained an integral part of our military, but they also have always prayed according to their faith tradition. We believe that if chaplains are chosen to pray before a professional setting, they have a constitutional right to adhere to the religious expressions of their faith. For Christian chaplains, praying in the name of Jesus is a fundamental part of their belief and to suppress this form of expression would be a violation of religious freedom.

The current demand in the guidelines for so-called “no-sectarian” prayers is merely a euphemism declaring that prayers will be acceptable only so long as they censor Christian beliefs. Current surveys in the military indicate that upwards of 80 percent of soldiers identify themselves as Christians, and such censorship of Christian beliefs is a disservice not only to Christian chaplains, but also to the hundreds of thousands of Christian soldiers in the military who look to their chaplains for comfort, inspiration, and support, just as our military soldiers of other faiths look to their chaplains.

While some military members may find certain prayers to be offensive and wrongly claim that they are not non-pluralistic, we believe these restrictions raise constitutional issues involving the Establishment, Free Exercise and Free Speech Clauses of the First Amendment (There are numerous other offensive provisions throughout the proposed guidelines, including the onerous provision that chaplains can only speak of their faith with officers--the "peer to peer" provision). Officially inhibiting or defining what chaplains can and cannot say in effect establishes an official religion and burdens our military's chaplains' right of free speech.

We are requesting that you, as Commander and Chief, protect by Executive Order the constitutional right of military chaplains to pray according to their faith.

Hammas – New Democracy Or Old Terrorism?



Well, the Blogosphere has been abuzz with this Hammas supremacy at the polls in the Palestinian elections last week and there is good reason for it.

We have two competing ideas where it concerns Hammas’ future.

1)- Hammas actually running for election will eventually bring them into the real world of politics and distance them from terror as it did the IRA in Ireland. Because democracy tends to ameliorate extremism they will find their terrorism a thing of the past.

2)- This is a failure of democracy and Hammas will never be anything other than a murderous band of criminals.

Truthfully, there is no way to tell. Both points have their merit and logic and choosing one or the other is just guesswork this early in history. Yes, guesswork even with the fact that Hammas is claiming they have no intention of changing their tact and direction.

But, there is a long-range problem for the Palestinian Authority that tends to prevent it from coming into Democracy. The lies that form the basis of how Arabs think about their central problem, Israel, prevents them from being able to even make sense on the issue. They are so filled with lies, myths and garbage that they just cannot sensibly address their issues with the Jewish state.

Here are some of the fictions that seem to be widely believed by Palestinians (and the Arab middle East in general):

-The Jews on 9/11 warned their fellows not to go to work and no Jews died on 9/11. (Untrue. Somewhere around 500 Jews died that horrible day)

-The two blue stripes on the Israeli flag stand for the Nile and Euphrates rivers. The Jewish state intends to forcefully conquer all the land between those two rivers and incorporate that land into the Jewish state. (The two blue stripes represent the prayer shawl worn by Jews, the Tallit)

-There is a plaque or sign in the Knesset (The Israeli government’s building) that claims the Jewish state will spread between the Nile and Euphrates. (this is just idiotic)

-The Holocaust did not happen (What can one say about such stupidity?)

-Jewish scholars use the blood of young Arab boys (sometimes Christians) in their food for ceremonial purposes (ditto)

-Jews are pigs and dogs (ugh)

These idiotic, racist and childish claims go on and on, but these are some of the worst. They form the very basis underlying how Arabs think about Jews. With ideas like this infecting the thought process of how Arabs deal with Jews and the state of Israel it’s no wonder that no logic seems to ever be forthcoming in their conflict. And, until such ridiculousness is refuted, Arabs just will not be able to have enough respect for Jews or be able to treat them as human.

It’s also no wonder that Americans cannot understand the situation because we just have no frame of reference to be able to do so. The closest ideologies we ever had were the ways many whites felt about the American Indians or Negroes, both racist ideas that have been defeated soundly among the bulk of Americans.

It is almost beyond the average American’s ability to realize how racist Arabs are towards Jews.

We aren't free to protect the most vulnerable among us, unborn children. Government has decided the Constitution protects the taking of innocent human life.

We aren't free to do with our own property as we see fit. Government sets up zoning laws dictating what we can do and, if government deems it necessary for any reason, our property can be seized.

Sen. Byrd Votes in Favor of Alito!



Senator Robert Byrd, former Klansman from West Virginia, just came out in favor of Judge Samuel Alito to amazed Americans of all stripes.

In his speech on the floor of the Senate today he also decried the partisan bickering that bedeviled the confirmation hearings. I only heard some of his points, but I find it interesting that, if he was so incensed, that he didn't name names and point out specifics.

In any case, it would seem odd that one of the extreme left's prime attack dogs would turn against them to vote in favor of this nomination. But, when looking at his situation back home, we can hazard a guess why he did this. And it certainly wasn't for reasons of "conscience" or "principle".

Byrd is headed for an election fight for the first time a many, many decades. A Republican has announced that he will face Byrd in the up coming elections. Further, the state of West virginia has begun to lean Conservative and Byrd knows it.

So, he is attempting to gain himself a campaign talking point. Positioning himself as a "conservative" where it concerns judicial nominations. And, since Alito is going to win anyway, this is a painless way for Byrd to make some points along those lines.

In other words, it is a mere campaign ploy. Byrd doesn't believe a WORD of what he is saying.

After all, it must be remembered that he was beating the drum of filibustering the Roberts hearings and Roberts is considerd FAR less "conservative" than Alito by the extreme left to which Byrd generally holds fealty.

Lastly, I would like to say that it is obvious that these Democrats really don't believe the tripe they are dishing out about Alito. If he really was the "danger to the constitution" they claim he is they would make every attempt to filibuster his nomination. But they are not. they lack the courage of their claimed convictions.

US congressman takes Google to task on China



GraphicGoogle will be called to task in Washington next month following a controversial decision by the internet search engine to launch a China-based version of its website that will censor results to avoid angering the country’s Communist government.

The decision by Chris Smith, a Republican congressman from New Jersey who chairs a House subcommittee on Human Rights, to call for a February 16 hearing to examine the operating procedures of US internet companies in China, represents the first signs of what could become a serious backlash against Google and other internet companies in Washington that are perceived as capitulating to the Chinese government.

Mr Smith on Wednesday accused Google of “collaborating .. with persecutors” who imprison and torture Chinese citizens “in the service of truth”.

“It is astounding that Google, whose corporate philosophy is ‘don’t be evil’ would enable evil by cooperating with China’s censorship policies just to make a buck,” he said.

The hearing will also include testimony from Yahoo, Microsoft, Cisco and senior State Department officials who advise on China.

Mr Smith on Wednesday in a statement drew comparisons between Google and Radio Free Europe and Asia, reflecting on the capacity the radio stations had on empowering the “voices of freedom throughout Communist countries”.

News about the congressional hearing came just hours after another lawmaker, Democratic senator Patrick Leahy, spoke out on another issue that has enveloped Google in recent days: the company’s refusal to comply with a subpeona by the Justice Department that would require it to hand over toe the government extensive records about the way people use the company’s search engine.

In a letter to attorney general Alberto Gonzales, Mr Leahy demanded more information about four subpoenas to major internet companies, including how the DOJ intended to use the information while protecting privacy rights, and whether the DOJ planned to request further information from the companies.

Mr Leahy, the leading Democrat on the judiciary committee, said the collection of data on law-abiding Americans posed “unique concers”.

I thought it was supposed to be that "education" or "information" leads to freedom? Why is it that Google feels it easy to deny the US government its info to help stop terrorism, but feels it just fine to assist China to oppress its people?

SHAME on Google! Shame on AOL and the REST of them, too, because they are MORE interested in Chinese money than doing what is morally RIGHT to do.

Google should have told China that it isn't interested in doing business with them. So should AOL and the rest of them. The commie Chinese scum will just steal the technology anyway, like they do everything else, and leave Google holding the bag in the long run.

Information IS freedom and Google is oppressing the beleaguered Chinese people.

I wasn't too surprised to hear Nagin's recent comments regarding a 'Chocolate City'. He is of course back peddling and trying to explain himself to no avail. The entire political system in Louisiana is now showing itself for what it is again. Nagin's comments have to have alienated just about every friend he managed to make earlier in the aftermath of Katrina. He has taken the blame for that which he managed to mismanage. Now he has to take the blame for being the new Earl Butz. For those of you who don't remember, he made a few comments about how to make the blacks happy or shall I say, how to appease them. There was another rather stupid error on his part when he was talking about the Pope. The Pope had just made comments about not using birth control. In an off record comment he said something like 'He No-a Play-a dah Game... He no-a make-a dah rules.' He trusted a reporter and made the comment off the record, another sign of bad judgment. It was all over the news the next day.

Nagin has almost nothing left of the bridge he built to DC. There is little left but a crater where that bridge used to be, a crater with a certain special nuclear glow to it. The people in Slidell are having trouble going to sleep at night because of that glow. It’s like the sun never sets there any more.

Quite a few people are still talking about the damage, or shall we say the mismanagement, of the levees. They are looking for someone to blame for those levees failing. I am personally watching the next big levee blame game issue as it happens bit by bit each and every day. I have now dubbed the west bound I-10 bridge over Lake Pontchartrain 'The Bridge to Eternity' Yes it is official - I have actually dubbed something. What an important day this is. (Well maybe to me it is)..................

Oil producer opens massive Civil War museum



FORT WORTH, Texas After two decades collecting Civil War treasures, Ray Richey finally reached a turning point.
The 50-year-old Texas oilman had to decide whether to build another storage building, a museum for his collection -- or quite collecting.

Richey went with the museum idea -- and developed an expansive building just a short walk from his office on Fort Worth's western outskirts.

But the Texas Civil War Museum, which opened to the public today, is more than just his huge stockpile.

Richey partnered with the United Daughters of the Confederacy, whose Texas collection was displayed in Austin from 1904 to 1988. The U-D-C had been seeking a permanent home for their artifacts since being uprooted by renovation of the State Capitol.

Taxes and regulations: The Vermont Disadvantage



IT IS AN axiom of commerce that economic development follows Interstate highways. Except in Vermont.

A new study by University of Vermont economist Arthur Woolf has found that development that should have come along I-91 up the Connecticut River instead came across the river — in New Hampshire. The reason? Higher taxes and regulations in Vermont.

“We’re seeing the gap grow larger and larger each time we do the study,” he told the Valley News. “Those communities along the river are really feeling the impact now.”

In a speech before a Princeton audience of about 800 on January 18th , Hillary Rodham Clinton, Senator from New York, had a few words of scorn for the Bush administration's handling of the Iran nuke situation.

"I believe that we lost critical time in dealing with Iran, because the White House chose to downplay the threats, and to outsource the negotiations. I don't believe you face threats like Iran or North Korea by outsourcing it to others, and standing on the sidelines. We cannot, and should not, must not, permit Iran to build or acquire nuclear weapons. In order to prevent that from occurring, we must have more support, vigorously and publicly expressed, by China and Russia, and we must move as quickly as feasible for sanctions in the United Nations."

This is so filled with non-sequiturs and reversals of logic that it boggles the mind. It smacks of tirangulation as opposed to a clarification of her position as she tries to come at the problem from every angle to appear as if she can please all her potential constituents at once..................

Worthless Reformers

Talk about reforming the Republican Party has become all the rage these days, but the means to doing that are scarcely mentioned. No one wants to assign blame or risk their popularity by suggesting unpopular dissent.

Many commentators will mention something about the need for a conservative revival, but in the end, their time is spent lamenting the infeasibility of third parties. They rarely mention how they plan on actually enacting the "revival," doing nothing but emphasizing the need to keep supporting the Republican Party.

Republicans will probably have a few losses in the 2006 midterm election. After that, all the fuss over the party's lack of conservatism will probably be forgotten, and winning elections will return as most people's foremost objective. Another stale, empty, failed suit – Newt Gingrich, perhaps – will emerge as the chubbiest, most obsequiously genial candidate, and receive the party's nomination. The revolution will be over before it began, and so will the next eight years...........

Senator Leahy Thinks You Are Stupid



Vermont's Senator, Patrick Leahy, gave us his reasons for voting against the confirmation of Judge Sameul Alito for the Supreme Court on the 24th of January. ( Click here for full text) After reading the remarks as published, one cannot help but imagine that Leahy feels anyone hearing his remarks must not be smart enough to see that he is a blatant liar. Further, he must imagine that those same people are so stupid that they will not be able to look up simple historical facts easily enough to see where he is lying.

I don't usually like to come right out and say that this politician or that is an outright liar, but it just cannot be avoided with so many of today's crop of say-anything-to-win Democrats. And Leahy is one of the worst demagogues they have.

It is always lamentable when politicians treat us as if we were all dolts.

First of all, much of Leahy's speech was time wasted on issues not germane to the Alito nomination. A large portion was simply blatant advertisements for his many off topic resolutions and agendas that he has been pushing since 9/11.

But he started out right off the bat with a major lie.

"This is a critical nomination, one that can tip the balance on the Supreme Court radically away from constitutional checks and balances and the protection of Americans’ fundamental rights."

Was Leahy absent during the confirmation hearings? Or was he one of the cadre of Democratic Senators who couldn’t be bothered to stay through all the testimony about Alito's character offered by past acquaintances from both ends of the political spectrum? If he had stayed he would have realized that there is no proof, not even a hint, that Alito desires to move the Court away from a protection of fundamental rights.

Next, Leahy launched into his partisan claims that US citizens have lost fundamental rights because of Bush’s activities since 9/11. Typically, though, he offers no specifics just presenting his claims to be fact.

Leahy goes on to subtly try to recast the Supreme Court's role in the US system. In a subtle comment he attempts to cause the American people to imagine that the SCOTUS has a simple role to "serve as an effective constitutional check on the presidency".

But, while the SCOTUS does have this role as a part of its venue, it is not the sole reason it exists. In fact, it is one of its lesser roles, the main role being to review laws passed by Congress and the states to determine if those laws abide by the Constitution. So, the SCOTUS serves as a check on Congress and the states and the laws they craft to govern the country much more often than it serves as a check on the president.

Further on, Leahy shows that truth and fact will never enter into an argument posed by the good Senator. He continues to posit the lie that Alito enjoyed seeing a child “strip searched”.

Leahy said, "We know Judge Alito would have excused the strip search of a 10-year-old girl that was not expressly authorized by the search warrant."

Leahy knows this is a lie, but he uses this for partisan effect anyway. First of all, a truthful reading of the case in question (Doe v. Groody) proves that the child in the case was not "strip searched". Further, the concept of "good faith" requests by police for search warrants vindicates the search of the child who was suspected of having drugs hidden upon her person by her own drug dealing Father.

Alito also answered to this case in the confirmation hearings. "I wasn't happy that a 10-year-old was searched", he said. He continued with: "I don't think there should be a Fourth Amendment rule ... that minors can never be searched. Because if we had a rule like that, then where would drug dealers hide their drugs?"

Apparently, Leahy is just fine with drug dealers being allowed to use children to hide illegal drug stashes from searches by police. Leahy would "excuse" this child abuse as long as it serves to knock down a Bush appointment.

If it wasn't enough for Leahy to misquote Alito's intentions on the non-existent "strip search" question, he also had to reach back further into history and misquote one of our Founders. Leahy misuses Ben Franklin’s famous admonition that, "Those who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security."

Franklin's warning words would be apropos if Leahy could have followed his usage up with any "essential liberty" that US citizens have lost under this president. However, using the quote as a simple form of demagoguery is all Leahy leaves us with.

Leahy next attempts to claim "This President has made some of the most expansive claims of power since American patriots fought the war of independence".

I hate to say it, but we have here another outright lie. Bush's actions in wartime pale in comparison to the abusive use of presidential power of past presidents. Lincoln, Wilson and FDR, just to name three, used their emergency powers much more energetically in wartime than has Bush. And Leahy knows this to be a fact. He is merely attempting to purposefully mislead anyone who reads his remarks in a effort to hurt the Bush Administration.

Now, here is the segment that many writers have focused on re Leahy's ridiculous comments and it is another area with which we can discover Leahy's lies.

"No President should be allowed to pack the courts, and especially the Supreme Court, with nominees selected to enshrine presidential claims of government power."

Here is a sly allusion to the court-packing scheme that FDR conceived in the late 1930's to force the Supreme Court to accede to his New Deal policies, policies that were being knocked down by the SCOTUS one by one.

But, FDR actually attempted to create additional seats on the Court thereby enlarging the Court, seats he would stuff with judges who would vocally support his policies. Bush, on the other hand, is only filling positions that have naturally become open with retirements and deaths of sitting justices. There is no “packing” scheme in the offing today. Further, we must all realize that Bush ahs only made two nominations which is a far cry for “packing” anything.

Further, every president has a right to offer candidates that he feels will support the correct principles of American jurisprudence and those correct ideas will surly be the ideas to which the president himself adheres and nearly every president, to a man, has made such nominations. There is simply nothing out of the ordinary here and Leahy also knows this.

It is sad that we are in an era where Democrats know no limits to using outright lies to further their political aims. In years past, a Supreme Court nomination was considered one of such importance that injecting "politics" into the process was thought to be improper.

Apparently, to Democrats today, nothing is sacred.

The rising generation of Americans has been shaped profoundly by two events that have anniversaries this week. The first event was the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade 34 years ago. The second event was the inauguration of Ronald Reagan 25 years ago.

Because of the first event, one fourth of our generation is no longer alive. Roe Babies, 45 million of them since 1973, are missing.

But there are some positive signs on the cultural horizon. In recent years, public opinion regarding abortion has continually shifted toward the pro-life position. The number of Americans calling themselves pro-choice has declined by 10 points since 1995, while the number of Americans calling themselves pro-life has increased 16 points. According to a Gallup poll, a decade ago, 56 percent of Americans considered themselves pro-choice and 33 percent said they were pro-life. Today, according to a Zogby poll, 49 percent of Americans say they are pro-life, compared to 46 percent who say they are pro-choice.12 .........

As usual, the author was spouting how the true Christian does not judge by appearance since God looks on the heart. But doesn't the true Christian realize the outside is a reflection of what's on the inside?

Actually, if these people weren't so wrapped up in appearances, why are they in such a rush to look like every other slob on the streets today? Even those that got them in the military know doubt did so as a result of peer pressure and often regret having done so later in life often after coming to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.

But unlike previous generations or those with some class about them who later felt a godly sense of shame and exhibited repentance over what they had done or at least try not to draw attention to themselves, those getting them nowadays in light of our therapeutic Winfreyite culture have to tell everyone and expect all those hearing about it to offer up a hearty round of applause or be prepared to face the ubiquitous charges of prejudice and closemindedness (they'd probably even work in allegations of racism and homophobia if they could)............

Ask anyone who knows me, and they will confirm that I love chocolate. A bona fide chocoholic. Chocolate is proof that God loves us; it is the closest thing to celestial glory we will find on earth. Yep, I just can't get enough chocolate.

And apparently, neither can Mayor Ray Nagin.

When I said that chocolate is proof that God loves us, I meant it literally. It wasn't a metaphor for a race of people. In our Politically Castrated society, referring to blacks as "chocolate" could only be done by a black. If a white had tried that, he'd already be attacked, sacked, and hacked.

Mayor Nagin, however, believes that God's blessing of chocolate food is proof that He also prefers chocolate people. He made that enormous leap with ease, and not a single PC cop called him on the blatantly racist comment.

After all, MSM are chocoholics too; the people, if not the food. They've made it easy for racists such as Ray Nagin, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton to speak their bigoted minds with the same reflexive simplicity that most of reserve for a sneeze. The message has been loud and clear for forty years now: what's good for chocolate ain't good for vanilla. .........

In his first run for the Senate, Edward Moore Kennedy's Democratic primary opponent looked him in the eye and said, "I ask, if his name was Edward Moore, with his qualifications - with your qualifications, Teddy - if it was Edward Moore, your candidacy would be a joke, but nobody's laughing."

They were too busy voting. With one brother in the White House and another running the Justice Department, the joke sailed to victory. With vigor, naturally.

More than four decades of senatorial bloviating later, Kennedy is still playing it for laughs. It's taken me a while to realize it, but I'm beginning to think the irrepressible Teddy has been teasing us all this time.

Take last week as an example. At the Alito hearings the Massachusetts solon had a flunky stand behind him holding a large card. The sign was titled, "Excerpt from Concerned Alumni of Princeton Magazine." The judge's membership in that organization had become an issue, at least for Teddy and comrades.

The excerpt was from a 1983 article and began: "People nowadays just don't seem to know their place. Everywhere one turns, blacks and Hispanics are demanding jobs simply because they're black and Hispanic. The physically handicapped are trying to gain equal representation in professional sports. And homosexuals are demanding the government vouchsafe them the right to bear children. And now ... and now come women.". ....................

Developers Conspire To Confiscate Property From New Orleans Residents

As usual, the mantra of tyranny in this instance is "sustainability" and "isolation".

As I figured, the poor souls that have lost everything in the Katrina tragedy will now have what little remains taken away for the sake of the elites.

There are plans to finagle away property at only 60% of its actual value, but even if 100 times the market value was offered, that is not the point.

If one really wants to lay the foundation of a new New Orleans, why not raize Bourbon Street notorious for its debauchery and devil worship.

So what if those that want to move back are isolated? It is their property.

One person to be commended shouted out at a hearing, "I'm ready to rebuild, and I'm not letting you take mine. I'm going to fight, whatever it takes, to rebuild my property. It's going to be baby Iraq for Joe Canizaro."

Seems this next battle of New Orleans could be the shot heard round the world in the ongoing war for the property rights of all Americans.

My Leftist Heart...(...In Iran-Francisco)

Quite often a statistic comes along that defines a people and gives you a clearer view of what they are. It also allows one to see similarities that were at one time hidden behind pious rhetoric. This statistic is such a case. I have included the link to the original article below. The claim is that the higher levels are mostly caused by intravenous drug use. If I lived in a theocracy I'd say that too.

Unfortunately I know too many people who have been over there and I've read a few articles or heard about them that explain that statistic much better.

One of the guys in the office had a friend who served in Desert Storm. He had been told to send out a patrol so he got two Arabs and as he was about to send them, he was stopped. He was told to send three or they wouldn't do the patrol. They would find other things to do instead. The poor guy went into overload because he couldn't figure out what this person was driving at. As soon as his CO pranced around him he understood and got an extra person to go with them. The patrol went off just fine because of it.

I know another young man that was blowing in doors in the middle of the night and raiding the insurgents. (Now called 'Freedom Fighters' by our leftist media.) He said the first time he had to do one of those raids it scared the bejeezus out of him because he said, "You just have no idea what they're going to do and so you don't know what to expect." But he got a real surprise. They blew the door and ran into the room yelling for those inside to drop any weapons, but all they could hear was scrambling and Arabic. When the dust settled they saw nothing but naked men trying to find something to put on. It was truly one of those times he wished the night vision goggles weren't so darn good and reliable. He said the first thing out of his mouth was "Dude, what the *Bleep*?!?!" One of his partners said he knew what it was and they all started laughing. I've been told, by more than a few, that this was not uncommon at all. It was almost expected by many after a while. After a while you just get nervous laughter and an "Oh that again."..................

As if we needed more proof that the Main Stream Media is biased against Conservatives, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer recently published an article all alarmed that Conservative NGO's (Non Government Agencies) were stepping up their activities overseas. This "news" article was so biased as to be laughable.

I wouldn't be surprised if the article's author, David Crary, is going around telling people he is a "journalist", but you wouldn't know it by this biased opinion editorial he is responsible for in the Seattle P-I. The article, Conservatives step up activities overseas, featured a quote from one pro-Conservative, but several quotes against Conservative NGOs from four separate interviewees. How's that for "balance"?

Instead of a factual presentation of the activities of U.S. conservatives overseas, we get a finger wagging, tsk-tsking, and a lot of overblown anti-Conservative rhetoric..................

'Washington Post' Suspends Comments on One of its Blog

NEW YORK Jim Brady, the executive editor at washingtonpost.com, notified users of the post.blog that the public comment feature had been suspended "indefinitely" after "a significant number of folks" posted personal attacks, profanity, and hate speech.

Attempts by E&P to reach Brady have been unsuccessful so far. It seems likely the move is related to controversy in recent days over Sunday’s Post column by ombudsman Deobrah Howell. She has been heavily criticized by some political Web sites and bloggers for writing that indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff gave money to both political parties, when most research shows he only gave directly to Republicans.

Then, this morning, Howell responded at the Post’s blog, explaining that she had heard from “lots of angry readers” and wished that she had written that Abramoff "directed" contributions to both parties, adding: “While Abramoff, a Republican, gave personal contributions only to Republicans, he directed his Indian tribal clients to make millions of dollars in campaign contributions to members of Congress from both parties.

Confessions of a Blogger…



I have to confess that I have been chosen to deliver an address at the upcoming convention for center-right Bloggers, Blogging Man 2007.

The news of this gathering has come out too early. The Internet holds no secret for long, obviously. Within a week or so of the organizer's efforts to begin to line up speakers for their convention, the news began to spread like wildfire and the organizers were deluged with emails asking about the event and Blogs began rumor-mongering about it. So, the event advertising on the Net was launched months too early.

And, already, the scoffing and nay-saying has begun. Yeah, hard to believe, I know … or not.

Anyway, the nay-saying has started. Here are a few little digs:

There ya go, "Anonymous". Make fun of someone’s physical appearance. What do you think our lefty and proud Mr. "Anonymous" would say if a Conservative made fun of that flatulent, bloated Michael Moore? What do you think our intrepid lefty would say if I said that Helen Thomas looked like the less sentient mother of Jabba the Hut? Bet he would think that making fun of THEIR appearance is uncalled for.

Now here is a real funny one. The one and only Mr. James Wolcott whose bio helpfully reminds us that he wrote a few novels and a few reviews here and there - and in New York City, no less - seems to have already proclaimed that Blogging Man 2007 is a bust.

"TBogg brings to our sleepy attention a forthcoming jamboree that threatens to be the singular non-event in postmodern non-history: Blogging Man 2007, being held at a bingo parlor in Reno, Nevada, brushfires permitting."

So, Mr. Wolcott, who’s name is sure to go down in history among the list of the great who-are-theys of America's illterati in the 21st century, has looked down his nose at this venture, laughing at the temerity of those ... shudder... Bloggers.

And, um, where did he deliver this properly leftist scoff? Did he do it in the pages of the New York Times? How about even the LA Times? No. He did it on his Blogg!

Mr. Wolcott may be a writer, but it seems obvious the concept of irony is not one of his oft used and worn out devices.

Now, one of the slams against this nascent convention is that there are no "big names" set up as speakers. Certainly, I am no "big name" and I make no pretense that I am. If one should ask the average man on the street if he knows Warner Todd Huston, proprietor of Publius' Forum, I am sure most would say no. I'd suggest that if we were to ask the same proverbial man on the street who is James Wolcott, he would still say he didn't know the name, but that is another story.

Still, the Bloggin Man, 2007 committee has already snagged the services of Hugh Hewitt, one of the nation's most well known conservative Bloggers and long time writer and opinion editorialist, as well as a nationally syndicated radio talk show host. And there is still over a year and a half until the kick off date of October 18th, 2007 and they have yet to announce their Sunday schedule. There is plenty of time for great things yet to be announced.

But, I would like to use the words of Eric Odom, one of the convention's organizers, on the "big name" issue.

In a reply to another Blogger on this issue, Odom said,

" Who said Hewitt was the star attraction? We’ve got 20 months my friend. Besides, blogging isn't about big names, it's about the little names. Those are the guys that are making the entire scene function the way that it is. Should we exclude them because they don't have the 'celebrity status'?"


Well, of course he is right. It is the "yous" and "mes" in this world that are creating the Blogosphere. Not the well edjumacated University Professor, high sitting politician or anyone in the well fed elite that are doing so. It is the average Joe. Or the average Todd, in my case. We are shaping minds and at times altering the landscape of our political and media order.

Hey, we got Eason Jordan of CNN and Dan Rather fired didn’'t we? That ain't nuthin', as the old saw goes.

It's only nasty, capitalistic Big Business (Halliburton again?) that wants war in order to make blood-money profit from the lives of innocent civilians. All we have to do is let the intellectuals discover what material goods Iran wants and fork them over, even if the material goods amount to the extermination of Israel. That's, in liberal eyes, a small price to pay for restoration of French, German, and Russian approval for American foreign policy.

Meanwhile, however, liberals are leaving nothing to chance. Iran's brazen reopening of its nuclear production facilities has stirred up a real hornets' nest. Secretary General Mohammed El Baradei of the International Atomic Energy Agency that he told reporters in Vienna he was "losing his patience" with Tehran's leaders.

This must have terrified the Mullahs; heaven help them should Mr. El Baradei's impatience rise to the level of irritation. ...........

Bill To Prevent Feds From Confiscating Guns

In the January session of the New Hampshire legislature, a bill has been introduced to prevent officials from confiscating legally owned guns from the citizens of the state during a state of emergency. (See text of bill - House Bill 1639-FN)

During the Katrina disaster, attempts were made by Federal Marshals to sweep certain areas free of guns. Naturally, there was no way to discern legal guns from illegal in the midst of the crisis, so it was assumed that all guns would be confiscated by Federal officials.

Now, as a gun rights advocate, I must stand against this abuse of Federal power. Though, I must say that I can certainly understand the desire that FEMA officials had to assure the safety of rescue workers who were trying to help the citizens of a devastated area. It is certainly not an unreasonable assumption to make that rescue workers should expect not to be shot at as they attempt to save people's lives, after all.................

Syrian Official Linked to Terror



WASHINGTON (AFP) - The White House on Wednesday for the first time named a Syrian official as having "directly contributed" to support for the insurgency in Iraq, as the United States moved to freeze his assets.

The charge came after the US Treasury Department slapped the financial sanctions on the official, Syrian military spy chief Asset Shawkat, the brother-in-law of President Bashar al-Assad.

"Mr. Shawkat, as Syria's chief of military intelligence, has directly contributed to Syria's support for terrorism, including the insurgency in Iraq, Palestinian terrorist groups given shelter in Damascus, and Hezbollah and other terrorist groups in Lebanon," said White House spokesman Scott McClellan.

Shawkat "has also been deeply involved in Syria's ongoing interference" in Lebanon, he added. "Today's action is a significant signal that those, like Mr. Shawkat, who support Syrian terrorism will be held to account."

US moves diplomats out of Europe



The US is to reduce the number of its diplomats posted to Europe, and will send more to other countries, including China, India, Nigeria and Lebanon.

"America must begin to reposition our diplomatic forces around the world," Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Wednesday.

She said it was an anomaly that the US had the same staff levels in Germany as in India, more than 10 times the size.

She said the redeployment would help foster democratic and economic change.

Ms Rice told students at Georgetown University that President George Bush's administration was committed to "transformational diplomacy".

The philosophy was an attempt "to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world," she said.

"Transformational diplomacy is rooted in partnership, not in paternalism," she said, adding that it was based on "doing things with people, not for them."

Although the state department has 7,440 diplomats in foreign countries, there are nearly 200 world cities of more than a million people in which the United States has no formal diplomatic presence, she said.

"This is where the action is today, and this is where we must be."

I have been a frequent poster and fan of Ted Nugent's forum for a couple of years now, but when I came back to it last spring after about a six month hiatus while caring for ill parents, things had changed. Some of the old schoolers like myself who had been there for more than a year were sending me warnings about one of the newer moderators there, some Buddhist little hippy named "J", who was censoring the speech of conservatives and banning some of NUGE's long-time supporters.

I refused to believe it was true. After all, NUGE has built an image as one of the few rockers who follows conservative rules, and who believes firmly in the right to speak whatever is on your mind, NO MATTER WHAT. So surely these old friends were exaggerating.

Two drinks later, the waitress won't go near them, the women customers are insulted, one of the happy ones isn't so happy anymore and the little guy is sneering at you. You come out from behind the bar and approach the boss' table to suggest he tell his friends to hit the road. The jackass sees you approaching, gives a preemptory wave of his manicured hand and says, "I'm busy"

Luckily there are enough regulars there who'll help you escort the stooges out the door.

That pretty much sums up where the United States is regarding the illegal alien invasion doesn't it? ............

3 Percent Fee On Cell Phones Started 107 Years Ago



Call To Repeal Tax Under Way

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- There is a call to repeal a cell phone tax most people probably don't even know they are paying, NewsChannel5 partner ONN reported.

Anybody who has ever tried to decipher a cell phone bill knows how tough it can be. One of the charges is a 3 percent fee on every cell phone bill in America. The origin of the tax predates the invention of the cellular phone by nearly a century.

Annie Brinkman and her friend, Stacey Lemle, don't know it, but every time they use their cell phones, they are supporting the war effort -- the Spanish-American War.

The 1898 war involved Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders.

The fee began as a luxury tax on phones at the turn of the 19th Century. And we're all still paying for it today.

Phone bills don’t specify that the tax originates from the Spanish-American War. It is labeled as the federal excise tax, which amounts to 3 percent of every monthly bill.

"When you say it's a federal excise tax, you know, most of the time, oh it's the federal excise tax," said Laura Merritt of Verizon Wireless. "And that's just understood that it's a tax you pay. Where exactly those funds go is something that's a mystery to all of us."

It's not such a mystery anymore. And now, at least three federal courts have ruled the tax illegal. Many cell phone companies support a repeal of that tax. But they say they are caught in the middle.

"We're required to continue collecting that tax from our customers until the IRS tells us to stop doing that," said Merritt.

Some lawmakers are demanding cell phone companies stop collecting the tax and refund three years worth of fees.

But for now, every time you make a cell phone call, you'll continue to pay for a war fought more than 107 years ago.

Secularists Once Again Call For The Suppression Of Knowledge

Since the 1920's or thereabouts, secularists have invoked the imagery of the Scopes Monkey Trial as evidence that conservative Evangelicals are bent on suppressing knowledge in the realms of science and literature.

Most following the news are no doubt aware of the ongoing angst on the part of unbelievers and Modernists regarding the propriety of introducing Intelligent Design into the Biology classroom since in their eyes suggesting anything but the materialist hypothesis (itself a faith-based assumption) diminishes the rigor of so-called scientific education. Instead, they suggest such ideas should be considered as part of the Social Studies or Humanities curriculum.

Yet such gestures of enlightened magnanimous compromise are little more than a canard. For when it becomes time to examine the metaphysical issues within what liberals previously promoted as the appropriate venue for such a discussion, they then cry Separation of Church and State. Thus, what they really want is a monopoly on the perspective taught across all of public education...........

The King Legacy Reviewed

Today, I am in a reflective mood it has been thirty-eight years since his death, and Dr. King legacy rambles throughout my brain. Of course, such reverie was attributed to the holiday that was created for him but it seems a bit ironic, that we have one of the largest, if not "the" largest "marades" (clever isn't) in Denver, not bad for a cow town. Nonetheless, the local papers The Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News both had articles and editorials on Dr. King yet the coverage seemed wanting; and, what was interesting was how each approached the legacy.

In the more liberal paper (The Denver Post), the commentary in the lead editorial was 338 words long while the more conservative paper (Rocky Mountain News) had more eloquently stated editorial was 451 words long. This minor importance may seem minute, and I am not advocating a small novella, but it was interesting, of the two papers, the liberal paper had the least to say.

Oh I know, its not their fault, after all, it was a stretch for them to find the eventuated negative tone their editorial took, but as the dissenting opinion paper, I expected better; or at least, a more fervor attack. Admittedly, the legacy of Dr. King had a great impact on the nation; nevertheless, his vision has been mutated and hindered by corruption and political opportunists. ... .........

What happens when Iraqi "insurgents" take on Zarqawi's thugs?

The best news from Iraq this year would certainly be the long New York Times report of Jan. 12 on the murderous strife between local "insurgents" and al-Qaida infiltrators. This was also among the best news from last year. For months, coalition soldiers in Iraq had been telling anyone who would care to listen that they had noticed a new phenomenon: heavy fire that they didn't have to duck. On analysis, this turned out to be shooting or shelling apparently "incoming" from one "insurgent position" but actually directed at another one.

That would be bad enough news for the video-butchers and the bombers of mosques, but there was worse to come. On Aug. 14 last year, the Washington Post published the following lead paragraph on its front page:

Rising up against insurgent leader Abu Musab Zarqawi, Iraqi Sunni Muslims in Ramadi fought with grenade launchers and automatic weapons Saturday to defend their Shiite neighbors against a bid to drive them from the western city. … Dozens of Sunni members of the Dulaimi tribe established cordons around Shiite homes, and Sunni men battled followers of Zarqawi, a Jordanian, for an hour Saturday morning. The clashes killed five of Zarqawi's guerrillas and two tribal fighters, residents and hospital workers said. Zarqawi loyalists pulled out of two contested neighborhoods in pickup trucks stripped of license plates, witnesses said.

The use of "rising up" and "insurgent" in that first phrase is perhaps unintentionally amusing. To be an insurgent is to rise up by definition; I've never read of it being done against an insurgent before, but then I did not pick this stupid term for the Iraqi thugs and fundamentalists in the first place. (Incidentally, on Jan. 5, the Times ran a story under the headline, "Rebel Attacks in Iraq Kill 50, 30 at a Funeral." The first paragraph of Richard A. Oppel Jr.'s article then began with the words "Insurgents unleashed car bombs," and the second paragraph said, "In the most lethal attack, terrorists hit …" My italics.)

December 7, 2005. The credits have just finished rolling. My wife, Maya, and her guide dog, Daisy, left the screening earlier. My colleague and I are looking at each other.

"Moral posturing," I say finally, "allows you to have it both ways. In Tinseltown terms, after the gunslinger blows everyone away, he has a proper crisis of conscience."

"Did 'Avner' have a crisis of conscience?" my colleague asks.

Such remarks illustrate why, in an era of moral chaos, Hollywood is unlikely to restore clarity. With due respect to pop culture and its undisputed master, one doesn't reach the moral high ground by being neutral between good and evil. Spielberg is a fabulous entertainer, a magician of a director, a very astute businessman -- maybe, just maybe, it's too much to ask that he should be a significant moral philosopher as well.

After the film opens, someone tells me that Spielberg shouldn't get an Oscar for not solving the problems of the Middle East. I agree. Spielberg should get an Oscar for making "Munich," the gritty Hollywood flick. For not solving the problems of the Middle East, he should get a Nobel Peace Prize, like everyone else.

Missile attack is a warning from CIA

KHAR, Bajaur Agency: The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States may not have achieved its prime target, the No 2 Al Qaeda leader Egyptian, Dr Aiman Al Zawahri, but the January 13 air attack on Damadola village in Bajaur Agency has certainly left a deep psychological impact on the tribesmen.

The tribesmen believe that the attack was a warning not to host ‘foreign guests’ in the future. “We spent the next day and night in fear and when we heard planes we run out of our homes to avoid a second tragedy,” 35-year-old Sadiqullah Khan, whose house was destroyed in the attack, told Daily Times.


Eighteen people, mostly women and children, were reportedly killed in the attack on three houses within a 200-metre radius in Damadola village, less than 20 kilometres from the Afghan border. The official death toll has been put at 16.A security official in Khar, the regional headquarters of Bajaur Agency that overlooks the Afghan province of Kunar, a hotbed of anti-US militants, said it seemed unlikely that the target was achieved.

“The CIA has sent a clear message to all tribesmen along the Pak-Afghan border that they are aware of all activities and can launch strikes as precise as the Friday attack,” he told Daily Times on condition of anonymity.

Precision-guided bombs and missiles targeted the houses where Al Qaeda’s no 2 leader was believed to be.

Sources said that the US had intelligence sources in almost every tribal region. The January 13 attack was based on ‘intelligence’ received from ground agents - both Afghans and Pakistanis.

However, the information seemed sketchy according to intelligence experts. “I think the the information about the alleged presence of the high value target was poor. He (the agent) was not sure in which house the Al Qaeda leader was present,” the security official said. Pakistani counter-intelligence was looking for ‘US agents’ in the area and tribal sources said that expulsion of Afghan refugees from tribal areas along the Afghan border was part of the ‘look-out’ for US-paid agents.

Damadola is regarded a stronghold of outlawed Tehrik Nifaz-e-Shariah Muhammadi (TNSM) that mobilised thousands of volunteers to fight with the Taliban against the Washington-backed Northern Alliance in Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks in the US. Fahim Wazir, Bajaur Agency chief administrator, does not believe the banned TNSM has widespread support in the area. However TNSM leader Maulana Faqir Muhammad hails from the same village and local tribal leaders do not agree with Wazir’s views. iqbal khattak

So, here is the thing. Yes, it is sad that these civilians were killed in this attack by the CIA. However, if it begins to stop them from hosting these terrorists, then it was an unfortunate, but necessary, price to pay.

In Alito v. Democrats, a Trial of a Different Sort

As of this writing, Samuel Alito, President Bush’s nominee for the Supreme Court, has little to fear concerning his confirmation.


In fact, the judge for the 3rd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals would be wise to worry about road burn, so fast and nearly seamless has his trip been through these hearings.


Sure, Democrats had Ted Kennedy trying to tar Alito with every smear he could muster, and then some. But deep within their oft-times vituperative hearts, Democrats, I think, are beginning to realize something: that bell just doesn’t ring anymore. Kennedy, the old liberal lion of the Senate, can no longer replicate the demagogic heyday of such political strategy.

Remember “Robert Bork’s America,” as detailed by Senator Kennedy in 1987? Roared the liberal lion: “Robert Bork's America is a land in which women would be forced into back-alley abortions, blacks would sit at segregated lunch counters, rogue police could break down citizens' doors in midnight raids, children could not be taught about evolution.”

This was not merely a creation of “Bork” as a verb, as when uber-feminist Florence Kennedy famously addressed the National Organization of Women (NOW) in 1991 on the importance of defeating the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the U.S. Supreme Court: “We're going to Bork him.” No. It was more than that.

Senator Kennedy had instituted a policy for Senate Democrats to follow all the way to these hearings for Samuel Alito. And even as Senator Kennedy made the old media and the far-left faithful coo with delight as he backhandedly accused Alito of being a “closet- bigot,” it suddenly seemed as if these Senate Democrats were nothing more than well-dressed mud-slinging hacks.

Try as they might, Democrats could not knock Alito off his non-committal perch regarding such issues as abortion, affirmative action, civil rights, and presidential powers.

So what did Kennedy and fellow Democrats manage to do? Well, for starters, they made Mrs. Alito shed a few tears when Senator Lindsey Graham, (R, NC) apologized for the Democrats repeated attempts at indirectly labeling her husband as a racist, or “closet-bigot.”

Democrats managed to convey to the public at large that the helplessness they displayed during the confirmation hearings of John Roberts a few months ago was no fluke. With regard to Alito, Democrats looked even worse, and could not muster the intellectual might to raise serious judicial and constitutional queries.

But perhaps the biggest degree of failure by Senate Democrats will reside in how the next Supreme Court nominee is treated by these same Senate Democrats. For you see, the political drive-by shootings and smear-jobs that constituted the heart of the Democrats political strategy for derailing any Republican nominee are no longer sticking like they used to.

In the future, Democrats may actually have to come up with real questions and concerns, as opposed to 5,000-word narratives that essentially say that “this Republican nominee is the devil.”

But with Alito, there was no intellectual thought applied to their questions. There was no rigorous examination of what Alito really did with regard to his 15 years on the bench.

There were just the Kennedys and Schumers and Bidens of the Democratic Party, coming to the horrible (theirs) realization that these public “trials” held by the Senate Judiciary Committee for a Supreme Court nominee will never be the same again.

The public has finally realized that just because Democrats claimed that any Republican nominee to the court was a racist, homophobe, sexist, child-killer (okay, I threw that one in…) and civil rights destroyer, did not actually mean it was so.

The actual substance of a charge has finally overcome the seriousness of a charge, as leveled for decades by Democrats against Republicans. For Republicans, and the country, it is a time well worth marking. For Senate Democrats and their liberal backers--like NOW and MoveOn.org--it signals an end to the smash-mouth politics of SCOTUS nominees, as the public just isn’t buying it anymore.

Still, there will be theatrics aplenty in Washington. Senator Kennedy’s demand of Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter (R, PA) to go into “executive session” regarding Alito’s ties to a now-defunct Princeton university organization called Concerned Alumni of Princeton (CAP) added up to network camera-inspired twaddle and showmanship. The cause was lost before Kennedy ever started.

Samuel Alito will soon sit among his peers on the Supreme Court. It is probably a safe bet to say that President Bush will have another pick before his presidency is done. It will be interesting to see if Democrats decide to challenge whoever Bush picks upon the merits of solid and questing argument, or fall back yet again to the Kennedy school of public demagoguery.

In a perfect world, Democrats would try, fail yet again, and still learn nothing. The GOP would have a solid hand on the court, and the metastasizing, creeping liberalism that has infected the country these past sixty years can now be somewhat turned back.


But that is in an imperfect world. Let’s wait and see if Senate Democrats have learned anything regarding these hearings and the now futile and failure-destined strategy of the Kennedy doctrine, or will it be just a question of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
