Unfortunately for those who don't like the current system of choosing a president, there is no method which will reliably produce the proper balance of all the desired qualities.

We, as a country, have chosen a method that apparently suits many of us for many reasons. The fact that some elitists don't like it fails to move me. Will they allow me to foreclose their preferred method if I can find a situation in which it's not perfect? I'll bet not.

I have to agree with you. I really see no reason to get rid of the Electoral College. Though the question comes up every few years.
